2024 Announcement of Kyujanggak Fellowship Program

The International Center for Korean Studies (ICKS) of Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) announces its fellowship programs for the year 2024.

Fellow
Eligibility
Any Korean Studies researcher who is a full-time faculty member at a non-Korean university, OR post-doctoral researcher from a non-Korean university who is working on topics related to Korean Studies (preferably using the Kyujanggak Archive materials)
※ A minimum of six-month residence at Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) is required.
※ Former Kyujanggak Fellows (Fellow A) are not eligible to apply.
※ Korean citizens returning to Korea with a Ph.D. degree from an overseas university without affiliation with overseas research institutions are encouraged to apply for early 2024 funding opportunities from National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea. Designating the KIKS as your institution of research affiliation for the NRF funding application requires a prior consultation with the KIKS. See the 2023 NRF funding offers below.

Benefits
- Research grant up to KRW 18 million (3 million paid monthly for maximum 6 months until February 2025)
※ Grants, stipends or other forms of payment from other institutions during the fellowship are not permitted.
Eligibility for on-campus housing
※ All housing-related expenses are the applicant’s responsibility. The International center for Korea Studies (ICKS) facilitates application for the BK Residence Halls at Seoul National University (SNU). Placement is not guaranteed.
※ If you or your spouse own real estate in Seoul, you are not eligible to apply.
※ Only your legal spouse and child(ren) are permitted to reside with you in the BK Residence Halls.
Round-trip airfare (for economy class tickets only)
※ The itinerary of the tickets must closely approximate the fellowship period.
※ The upper limit of reimbursement varies depending on the travel zone (KRW 1 million for Asia, 1.5 million for non-Asia), and is subject to negotiation with the ICKS.
※ Tickets purchased with mileage points cannot be reimbursed.

Position & Period of Appointment
Kyujanggak fellows will be appointed as visiting researchers of the SNU.
The term of appointment will be between 6 months and 1 year, and may begin from March 1, 2024 at the earliest.
※ The fellowship period must begin on the first day of a month, in compliance with the appointment schedule of the SNU.
※ Upon being selected, fellows must confirm their fellowship period to the ICKS and set their dates of entry to and exit from Korea.
※ The fellowship appointment may be cancelled if a fellow disregards his/her confirmed fellowship schedule by adjusting it arbitrarily without prior consultation with the ICKS.
※ The term of appointment can be extended, upon application and review by the KIKS committee, once for up to 12 months without extension of grant.

Obligations
Presentation: one presentation of research findings at the Kyujanggak colloquium during the fellowship period
Journal submission: one submission of a research article to the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies (SCOPUS & ESCI-indexed), published by the KIKS, within a month of the conclusion of fellowship
Report on research results: one 10-page written report on the outcome of the fellowship research within a month from the conclusion of the fellowship
Acknowledgement of support: citing the affiliation with the KIKS when publishing any work done during the fellowship period, and providing the ICKS with a printed copy of such publication.
Participation in events: active participation in academic events such as symposia, colloquia, book talks, and workshops hosted by the KIKS, and full cooperation in ICKS affairs (upon request and limited to 5% of the fellowship period)
Residency requirement: The total length of stay outside Korea during the fellowship period may not exceed 30 days. A pre-departure consultation with the ICKS about the destination, duration, and purpose of stay outside Korea is required.

Junior Fellow
Eligibility
Any Ph.D. degree candidate at non-Korean university with a research focus on Korean Studies (preferably using the Kyujanggak Archive materials)
※ A minimum of six-month residence at Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) is required.
※ Former Kyujanggak Junior Fellows are not eligible to apply.

Eligibility
Any post-doctoral researcher affiliated with an overseas research institution who is working on topics related to Korean Studies (preferably using the Kyujanggak Archive materials)
※ A minimum of six-month residence at Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) is required.
※ Korean citizens with postgraduate degrees from an overseas university are encouraged to apply for funding opportunities from National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea. Designating the KIKS as your institution of research affiliation for the NRF funding application requires a prior consultation with the KIKS. See the NRF funding offers below.

※ The term of appointment cannot be extended. Exceptions will be made for those supported by the NRF funding.

Report on research results: one 10-page written report on the outcome of the fellowship research within a month from the conclusion of the fellowship.

Kyunggak Archive Travel Grant
Eligibility
Postgraduate researcher affiliated with an overseas research institution who plans to conduct research using the collection of the Kyujanggak Archive
※ A minimum of 30-day residence at Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) is required.
※ If the source materials that you need can also be found in institutions and libraries other than the Kyujanggak Archive, you are not eligible to apply for this grant.

Any post-doctoral researcher affiliated with an overseas research institution who is working on an edited volume resulting from the academic events at Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (KIKS) or on the final stage of a book project involving Korean Studies (preferably using the Kyujanggak Archive materials)
※ Residence at the KIKS (maximum 3 months) is required.
※ A publication agreement with an leading overseas publisher is required.
※ Only a book project which has not received any sort of funding from other institutions is eligible for this grant.
※ A maximum of two people may apply for the same book project.

Obligations
Report on research results: the completed book manuscript within a month from the conclusion of the fellowship
Acknowledgement of support: citing the affiliation with the KIKS when publishing the book project completed during the fellowship period, and providing the ICKS with a printed copy of the publication within 6 months from the conclusion of the fellowship.
Participation in events: active participation in academic events such as symposia, colloquia, book talks, and workshops hosted by the KIKS, and full cooperation in ICKS affairs (upon request and limited to 5% of the fellowship period)
Residency requirement: residence outside Korea during the fellowship period due to unavoidable circumstances such as family events is permitted, but a pre-departure consultation with the ICKS about the destination, duration, and purpose of stay outside Korea is required. The total length of stay outside Korea during the fellowship period may not exceed 15 days.

④ book manuscript (the most up-to-date version indicating its stage of completion)
※ If a publication contract is not available at the time of application, please submit a book proposal sent to a publisher instead. The publication contract must be submitted within one month from the beginning of fellowship at the latest.
※ The submitted documents for application will not be returned and will be destroyed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act.

KFAS-Kyujanggak Fellow
Eligibility
Any post-doctoral researcher who is invited by the International Scholar Exchange Fellowship(ISEF) Program of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies(KFAS)/ Chey Institute for Advanced Studies(CIAS)

Eligibility, application requirements, eligible countries, volume of recruitment, etc. follows the ISEF program.
- The KFAS-Kyujanggak fellows are selected by a selection committee of the KIKS among the fellowship laureates of the ISEF program.
※ The KFAS-Kyujanggak Fellowship does not accept online application.
