Call for Papers
16th Kyujanggak International Symposium on Korean Studies
November 2-3, 2023
Since 2008, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies has held its annual Korean Studies Symposium. This Symposium allows for both in-depth discussions of specialized topics and exchanges with experts in many other areas of Korean studies.
For the 16th annual meeting (Nov. 2-3, 2023), we plan to host up to ten sessions as well as two keynote speeches. We invite panel proposals and/or individual papers in any field of Korean studies. We are particularly interested in innovative and cross-disciplinary proposals that seek to discuss key issues in the field, including the current state of the field and future prospects for Korean studies. Broad East Asian or global perspectives including China and Japan are also welcome to apply.
Preference will be given to research that is not yet contracted for publication; accepted papers can then be considered for publication in any of the journals published by Kyujanggak, i.e., Seoul Journal of Korean Studies (SCOPUS/ESCI), Hanguk Munhwa (KCI), and Kyujanggak (KCI). We also plan to publish edited volumes based on selected conference papers. Two edited volumes from the 13th Kyujanggak International Symposium in 2020 are expected to be published this year by Routledge (eds. by Joanne Cho, Lee Roberts and Sang Hwan Seong).
This year, the Symposium will be an in-person event along with online streaming via Zoom. The applicants whose papers are accepted for presentations will be invited to present their works at Kyujanggak. For domestic or online participants, an honorarium of 300,000 KRW will be offered to presenters and 200,000 KRW to moderators and discussants. Presenters from abroad will be offered up to 1,500,000 KRW for flights and accommodation support (this does not apply to moderators/discussants). For those who would like to be considered for travel support, an unpublished draft (at least 10 pages with font size 12) will be additionally requested for further evaluation.
For those who are invited to the Symposium and would like their papers to be considered for the Edited Volume publication, further instructions will be given after the participants are confirmed. Please be advised that the full paper (app. 6,000-7,000 words) should be submitted to be reviewed.
For application, please use the online application form on the ICKS website (icks.snu.ac.kr). The application is due by July 7, 2023 (KST). The requirements are as follows:
[Panel]
- Names, affiliation/title and contact information of all speakers (one moderator, four to five presenters, discussants up to two)
- Abstracts with titles (500 words each)
- CV of all participants
[Individual]
